Re: ST. JOHN'S ORPHANAGE, RAMSHALL?? or MAYBE VAUXHALL?? around 1875 - WHERE WAS IT?

My grand father, Gustav Richard Rudolph HAÁG's sister, Mary HAÁG, was shown as the next of kin on my grandfather's brother, Albert Edward HAÁG's military records. Mary's address was given as St. John's Orphanage, Ramshall?? or maybe Vauxhall? - very difficult to decipher the writing. We aren't sure of the date of this notation but it would have to be post-1974 for her to be in an orphanage.

Mary was born January 6th, 1866, at Irby Place, Boston. Her father, Theodore HAÁG, was a concert violinist and so they lived in quite few cities in England.

At age 9 in March 1874 Mary was baptized in Surrey not long before her father's death on Sept 1st 1874.

On January 15th, 1875, Mary, by then an orphan, was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital in LONDON with knee disease, and on April 22nd, 1875, Mary was admitted Cromwell House also in London for with a knee injury. Thus the St. John's Orphanage, Ramshall?? or maybe Vauxhall? could have been in SURREY or LONDON.

On the other hand, Mary's brother, my grandfather, Gustav Richard Rudolph HAÁG, was in St. Phillip's Orphanage on Oliver Road in Birmingham according to the 1881 census. Could the St. John's Orphanage, Ramshall?? or maybe Vauxhall? be in BIRMINGHAM?

Would appreciate very much any information about ST. JOHN'S ORPHANAGE, RAMSHALL?? or MAYBE VAUXHALL??

Thanks for this interesting website.

Hello I would like to communicate with anyone who knows anything about the Maryhill Industrial School in the 1880's.
I have been trying to trace Thomas croft from ashtree house Dewsbury we meet at a children's holiday camp in Skegness in the 70's I have never forgotten him and even though it's 40 years later I would still like to know how he is . We wrote to each other for a while after the holiday but then the letters stopped, I hope he's okay and has had a good life . Anyone who knows him can you please show him this, he might not remember me but I still have the copy of the song he wrote me sealed with a kiss x
I'm looking for any records of a Rose Mary Hills who was put into John Grooms orphanage at the age of 5 ( 1919-1920) she remained there for approx. 15 years. Her mother had died and her father was unable to look after her. She had 2 older sisters - Sarah and Henrietta (Hetty). They did not enter the orphanage as they would have been teenagers at the time.
Rose is still alive and well and hails from the East End of London. Now living in Dorset she is keen to see if there are any girls still around.
TYIA Maria

We have been searching for information on the birth parents of our grandmother and our great aunt. Our grandmother was Mary Agnes Archer and her sister, Rose Archer. Mary Agnes was born about 1876 in London and her sister Rose was born in 1879. Both Mary and Rose appear on the 1881 census as living at the orphanage run by the Sisters of Charity in London, England. The Sister I communicated with there states they have no record of the girls being there. They also are shown in 1882 as coming to Canada on the ship Peruvian with apparently a group of children from the Cardinal Manning party. We know the people that adopted both girls although the information is rather sketchy.
Both girls even though they were adopted by parties a distance from each other used the last name Archer in most documentation. Would very much like to know who the birth parents of the girls were and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Nelson cottage dorking,I was at this place through the 1960s can I get in touch with like minded.i give my permision to be contacted michael
I was born on the 6/5/1964 at a place called the Croft in kidderminster worcs, soon after my birth I was taken into care of local authority and placed directly from the Croft into some sort of baby home/nursery in stourbridge, later in life I spent time in a place called saint Charles burns, i have only three memories of the time spent there one of some sort of medical test were I had small suction caps put all over my head after my hair being covered in gel and the vivid image of a badly burnt boy and a girl with an open facial wound infested with worms
I was In Hornchurch Cottage Homes From 1949 to 1961.First in ROSE cottage then in WELLINGTON Cottage. My fault ( in you can call it that) was being too bright. I was made to do several nephews of the Matron of Rose cottage omework. If I refused I copped a beating.I clearly remeber refusing to eat fish .The result was the meal was reheated and placed before me each breakfast ,lunch and dinner the other children were told not to sit next to me.I stil refused to eat the reheated mess so it was outside and a beating. I am 71 now with three degrees.6ft 2ins with a pulse rate of 53.I am still siezed with anger about that place.I was made deaf in my right ear because of the left handed swine who hit me .In wellington Cottage at least they would not force me to eat fish( still can't eat it now and I won't go swimming)As long as I did the home work that was put in front of me I was left alone.I passed the 11 plus and was sent to Bush Elms Grammar. My intention is to have the Home Office make money recompense for the pain and suffering I went through( I got high distinctions in criminal law ).I have stepped in when I see small children being maltreated ( middle east fathers should not use thier children as punching bags ).I miss a lot about England but it is still the place where the minute you open your mouth you put yourself in in a social class.I ran away from the Hornchurch homes to Australia. But the memories of the boys who died still haunt me.
I was in PMVH in 1969, cottage 5 I think...
I was in Summerlands, Southsea from around 1964 to 1967 Can anyone tell me what sort of home this was. It was run by the Salvation Army. I had never been in trouble with the law but was neglected and abused at home. This home was very strict and we had no freedom. My name at that time was Jacqueline Hickman.
My brother (Nigel Code) and I were at St Marist's Catholic Orphanage somewhere near Stroud, Glos for 2-3 years following WW2 from about 1945-1950. We were not orphanes but among the many 'displaced' kids following WW2. Some from separated or divorced parents or born out of wedlock or for some other reason. For us it was irrisponsible parents who worked in hotels before the war and were keen to go back to work, but what to do with the kids? Does anyone have any information at all about St Marist's, Glos, and St Vincent's Torquay, where we also spnt 2-3 years around 1950-1953.

I was in Oak Bank, Seal in Sevenoaks, kent when I was about 7years old, my younger sister and brother were with me. This would have been in 1958/9. I have found it impossible to know why we were there and I just need to know. I had three other siblings that were not with us and my understanding is that stayed home with our parents. No one ever wanted to talk about it, I have relatives on my Fathers side who all live in Sevenoaks and they say they don't remember us being in there. I know the house is still there as I have seen it on google map. Just down the road was a school for the blind. Any info. would be much appreciated.

I have only just discovered this useful site. I am trying to find photos of children in the Nazareth Home Pembroke Street off St Clements Oxford. At least that is where the entrance for the Children was. But there was also an entrance on the Cowley Road Oxford. I was placed in this home with my sisters Fortunately, we were not in there for long, according to my elder sisters. Though they do say we were placed in there twice. I was too young to remember. But I do remember things that happened there.

A happy ever after story:-) My husband seemed destined to end up in a home. His mother and her sister were both put into a home as soon as they were 5. His mother had a daughter and she was put into a home as soon as she was 5, then she had my husband and he was put into a home all in Liverpool England. Long story short my husband migrated to Australia, we married and had 3 beautiful children they are all well educated, they have great jobs in Travel, Construction and the Law. The Lawyer married a Lawyer and we now have a beautiful grandson who adores Grandpa. I often say to 'Grandpa" when you were running around the streets of Liverpool as a young lad you.
could not possibly have imagined what a turn your life would take and how happy we would be.
After 65 years we found his sister (who also put her son into a home!) and brought her out to Australia for a holiday, after several visits she died in 2005. My husband is now 83.

Hi. Anyone who lived in Field House, Harpenden, Hertfordshire 1960 -66? I'd like to hear from you. I was there for 3 years.
I was at Broomhays Manor from 10th January - 8th April 1965 I would love to hear from anyone that was there at that time. The Matron's name at that time was M. L. Douglas I still have some surviving photos that were sent to my parents before I departed for Broomhays, also some of the surviving letters, and postcards sent from Matron to my mother, a few other mementos are a sea shell, and a Christmas stocking ornament off a Christmas tree that was given me at Easter when we had a wonderful big Easter egg after lunch, we all said that one day we would all return to Broomhays yet it was only recently that I was able to fine out where it was, although the building still exists. I would love to meet or hear from anyone that was there during this period it often feels so lonely now all these years later as if I am the only survivor although I am sure that there are others out there please make contact, I am currently writing my life story that I hope to get published in the not too distant future.
Forgive me''''''I spent today talking with avery old man who was beft in a carton on a street in Brooklyn, New York...As the Brits say one thing led to another hence this email...I AM NOT PROUD OF WRITING THIS>>>THIS SUBJECT HAS TORMENTED ME FOR COUNTLESS YEARS.
The Downend Homes..The occupants were know locally as the Homes Children....I attended Downed Junior School located next to the church/cricket field in the late 30's. I was not an orphan but the Homes Children were part of the school life. Above I write shame....They were not abused to the best of my child mind but they were completely ignored. At "play time" they stuck togethewr as one and to the best of my frail mind they always sat at the back of the class (again Together)..Sad to say we never said a woed to them...They did not exist. Their clothing was a serge army type horrible shorts , black as far as I remember and a (using the brit word Long sleeved heavy duty cardigan/sweather. I think the girls had long coarse woollen stockings and coursely amde dresses.

After I acn out of the army I asked around and the general concensus was they had been shipped to Australia.................Treatment metted out in Au has been well ducumented. I have personal friends whose parents and their friends took in these innocent children....Enough on that subject.

My brain is very, very rusty and I am old with too many medical problems to be able to pin point more concisely or precisely.....I believe the Homes were still operational when the plane went down on Bromley Heath road, not too far away.....For the past 50 years I know nothing whatsoever about Britain as i have lived in South America so bear with any shortcomings.....Regards juan
I was in lane cottage children's home from 1999 till it closed and we moved to the lodge in little clacton, I have been trying to reconnect with the guys that were there around the same time as me (Ross, Wendy, Charlotte, Lisa, Sam, Shaun, Steven, Christina) I know it's a bit of a

i was in the cottage home in the late 50.s but cannot remember where it was please can someone help
I am trying to find more information about my grandmother, known to us as Lilian Carling. We do not have a birth certificate for her but believe she was born about 1910 in the North of England. We have no record of her parents or other family and cannot find her on the 1911 census.

She told us that she was in some sort of residential dance school from the age of 3 until she was about 12 when she moved to live with a family in Southport and started at St. Marie's School there. An attack of rheumatic fever had apparently scuppered her chances as a professional dancer.

I would like to find any record at all of a 'dance school' operating as a children's home, particularly in the north west of England.

Has anyone else come across such a place?

thanks

I'm fairly sure the address was 33 Etchingham Park Rd. The people in charge were a Miss Cook and a Mr Bartlett. Do these details ring bells with anyone?
