Dorset Reformatory

Posted on 13th February, 2014

The Mirror have today published photographs from the 1870s of children who were convicted of relatively minor crimes and sent to the reform school. Reform schools, or reformatories were set up in the nineteenth century as the alternative to prison for children. The regime would undoubtedly have been harsh and without creature comforts in these schools and some children would have been sentenced to be there for the entire remainder of their childhood. More on reform schools can be found on this site here.
