The book traces the history of Barnstaple Workhouse, and the children's homes (known as cottage homes) in the grounds -  and looks at the lives of the people who lived inside and explores the family challenges and tragedies which led to them being there.

The residents came from all over North Devon, including, Ilfracombe, Lynmouth, Combe Martin and Barnstaple. Many were born in the workhouse itself.
