hi.. Im trying to find any information about the Wright-Kingsford Childrens Home in Finchley in 1900's.

Any information however small.. would be very much appreciated.
I am trying to find records of two of my mother's cousins. They were Frederick Evans (b 28 Jul 1910) and Winifred Evans (b 20 Mar 1912) - their parents Ellis Evans and Sarah (nee Price). Fred was born in Ellesmere Port, which is where Sarah's family lived. Winifred was born near Newcastle in Emlyn, Carmarthenshire in south wales, which is where Ellis's family was from - although latterly they lived in Toxteth, Liverpool.
Sarah died on 1 Apr 1915 in Warrington. Their father Ellis was away in WW1.
I have found records relating to Fred in Nova Scotia, Canada and it is certainly him, details of marriage etc, there are records of emigration of boys including a Fred Evans in 1920 and another in 1924, not sure if one or neither is the right fred but he certainly went to Canada. I believe that he was in a party of boys when he emigrated as a farm worker - and I believe that the home was an "Annie Macpherson' home. Do you have any details of these homes?
Secondly in the case of Winifred i have no idea what happened, i have not found a marriage or a death but family history has it that she did not go to Canada. The home that Fred was in seems to have been a boys' only home. Would there have been an equivalent home for girls in Liverpool - Winifred would have been three in 1915 when her mother died and so probably would have gone into a home at that time. I am still shocked that Sarah's family did not take in the children - especially her two sisters who were married and lived nearby when she died - anywhere there we are - I wonder if you can help.

many thanks

My 1st cousins once removed, Edith Joan Vallentin, and Howard Fitzwater, both went to the Middlemore Homes in Weoley Park Road, I have since made contact with Edith Joan's son, Gordon, in Canada.. The ironic thing about it, is that did not happen until I came to live here in Turves Green, and for nearly twelve years, I lived in Weoley castle, 1999-2011, I often wonder how many times I passed that building and never knew what it was, before it was knocked down...it should have been made a listed building...what a lost opportunity.

The beds were in long rows, and how I used to cry with homesickness. I remember showers, sometimes cold, also going to the nurses room each morning for small glass of tomato juice for vitamin intake, but don't remember any other care for my very dry skin. I also remember queuing up at a little hut or window, to collect red blanket for a rest on a camp bed outside. I loved a tree with small lantern shaped fruits on and nature walks. The classroom where we would write a letter home and also them being censored.i also run away with 2 other girls, taking hidden food with us, bought back Gospelby police.one night there was an air raid, and I got left in bed,on waking 2 planes were fighting overhead.

I am trying to solve an issue as to my great grandmothers identity in Essex/Suffolk from Australia. No mean task. I have found her parents marriage cert in Bosmere, Suffolk in 1858. I have her birth cert 1859 Broomfield/Writtle area of Chelmsford in Essex. *I have seen there is a record of her birth in the Otley Baptist records. I see her then as a 1 year old lodger in Broomfield with a totally new family who do not appear to be related in any way, as a lodger in the 1861 census, and still there in in 1871 and married in 1881. Her family on both sides are Agricultural labourers and thatchers, hardly well heeled enough to pay for her to lodge for at least 10 years or more ( or am I wrong and thatchers were in high demand and well off at that time?) I see her mother in service and living with her brother in 1861 and 71 census as a married woman but her husband nowhere in sight and then she too seems to disappear. Can anyone tell me if there was sort of arrangement through an institution which housed babies with new families if their parents were unable to care for them or would this have been a private arrangement? I noticed a little girl of the same name but 5 years old living under the same arrangement in Essex area (not a sibling - different parents but of the same profession) and I wonder what was going on. Can anyone help me and steer me on where to look.
May thanks

Hi I am researching into my mother's past she was put into a Shaftsbury Girls home which I think would have been the Sudbury Hall Home for Girls in Wembley Middlesex. She was born in 1913 and I am not sure when she would have entered the school. but would have been there before 1918. When she left she went "into service" in a large country house.- late 1920's. Her name was Irene May Morphett, I would love to know more about this home, unfortunately I have to wait for the release of the 1921 census for more info.
I am trying to find the orphanage where my father and two brothers, (all now deceased), may have lived from 1920. The boys grew up in Portsea, and I believe they were put in a home when their mother died in 1920. Their father died in 1918, and he had been employed in the Portsmouth dockyards.

My father would have been 6 in 1920. I was told that he and his younger brothers, (twins) were put in a home by an uncle who was in the Navy. My father's surname was PETTY.

If anyone has information on possible orphanages in the area, I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

I am trying trace anyone who was in wellington cottage at Hornchurch childrens home
I am looking for anyone who was in wellington cottage at Hornchurch childrens home
I'm not sure of the place I was in for some time in the 60's. It was in California somewhere. It was a very sad place. My 5 siblings and I were there for awhile. We were all separated with my twin sister & brother in the room with the babies and all the rest of us in separate places. We were all under 7 years old. I was in a room with lines of beds on each side and we had a small playground with a big fence around it. I remember watching "free" children playing outside the fence and crying because I wanted out. I never had shoes, only socks and the only time I could see any of my siblings is if I could get a glimpse of them during mealtime in the cafeteria. We were not allowed to talk. I tried to ask my brother who is 1 1/2 yrs older than me what he remembered but it upset him and he just said that he was very, very sick during that time.

Hi, hoping someone out there can help. Looking for the family of Susannah (Susie) Griffiths - my Great Grandmothers (Rachel) twin. Both born in 1910 in Porth, their Mother sadly died when they were twelve and for whatever reason they were sent to Llanwit-Varde (Church Village) Cottage Home. They were then both separated and sent into service - Susannah to London and My Rachel to Plymouth. She spoke about her a lot but sadly they never saw one another again. We would like to know what happened to her and hope she had as good a life as Gran. deborahlchiswell@gmail.com.
I am trying to trace my mother's family tree and would be grateful if there is anyone who remembers her. My mother's name was Marion Sylvia Desmond and she was in Styal Cottage Home somewhere between 1940 & 1950 and would have been around 9 years old. My mum had a brother called Roy, her dad was called Bruce and her mother called Vera. Thank you Julie

Trying to locate a Rebecca Cooney or relatives who was at Nazareth house in Highgate London early 1950's, I think she might have also lived around Finchley.

I am researching my adult children's father and my ex husbands family tree. His mother....according to family stories was in care when she was a child, I have drawn a blank on Ancestry.com which appears so far to confirm stories that his mother was illegitimate. Her birth certificate has dob as 1926, her mothers name is quite common in the south west, no father. so I am have drawn a blank to go back another generation. I am wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how I can best research children in care from that era in Bristol. I have no idea of the name of the home so I am pretty much stuck now. I hope this is not an inappropriate post for this site and thank you in advance for reading this.
Hi,i know my mother spent most of her childhood in an orphanage in Scotland but i dont know which one,Robina Renwick Rafferty d.o.b 2-8-28, her sister Elizabeth Renwick Rafferty d.o.b 20-3-27 Renwick was their mothers maiden name seems common in Scotland to do this, she died in December 1930 when the girls were 2 and 3yrs,father was William Telford Rafferty not sure what age they went in but i think they came out around 13yrs to live with an aunt, they were born in Edinburgh but my mum spoke of Perth quite alot ,i think they were Roman Catholic.
would be grateful of any info or tips on my search.
I was in a children's home in 1950 with my younger brother while our mother was in Pinewood sanatorium. The home was a large house in De la ware road Bexhill on sea. Braema was the name of the house. I remember the name Mumford as a lady who ran the home with someone we called Dai or something like it. I have a photo of us at a birthday party in the home with other inmates.
Braema Childrens home Bexhill.
I spent 9 months in the Holt reception home in Birstall Leicester and three years at Litchfield Hall Blackley in Manchester the good shepherd convent. looking back on the days I spent at the Holt I remember looking after the little ones their were two sets of sisters possible twins, only about 3 or 4 years old the name Mary springs to mind, all sisters were adopted and I wonder how much they remember and where they are now often think of them amongst others girls. the chapman's were in charge then, and Mr Spicer was the top social services man. I was 14 at the time and waiting to be place with someone ended up in Manchester with the nuns the year was 1968 any one remember me Rosie xxx
Hi
I have read your message about Laura Matthews. When did she marry and who were her parents?
A nurse child is normally like a foster child, being looked after by someone who is being paid. Perhaps her parents or mother had to work and had no one to care for her. There was nothing legal then, you just took your chances that your child was not cruelly treated.
I checked this Jones family Richard Jones the father was a gardener and with 9 children must have been quite poor he died in 1867 and his wife Esther died in 1870.
I tried to find out what happened to some of these children Maria Emily Jones b 1859 also died in 1870 age 11. Their youngest child Sarah Sophie Jones b 1861 was in 1871 age 9 living with her eldest brother Richard J. in Greenwich by 1881 working as a housemaid and she also died young age 26 in 1888. Richard John became a policeman and died in 1905. William Henry Jones 1840-1841, Henry Charles Jones 1844 to 1869 age 25 so died same year as father. Ann Elizabeth Jones born 1847 was sent to work as parlourmaid she married William Henry Johnson 1877 and died 1924. Louisa Jones b 1850 married to someone with surname Priest took in her brother Joseph Jones b 1856 who was born an idiot, by 1881 she had placed him in the Uxbridge workhouse and records show he was an imbecile he died in 1900. Lousia died in 1949 aged 99.
James Jones b 1853 lived next door to his brother Richard died 1917.
So by 1870 if your Laura was still with the Jones family she would have gone to another family or her own parents.
All for now

Hi Alma
Just read your message. I found your father's birth June qtr 1917 Liverpool mother's maiden name Pearson. However not sure about his 2 younger brothers. Do you have their names? I found a Thomas Ramsey Born March qtr. 1927 in West Derby mother name Pearson and also a Robert H. Ramsey born Dec qtr. 1920 St. Giles London (Iknow West Derby is near Liverpool but not the London birth)
If you have the brother's names I can look up their deaths for you or maybe still alive.
Do you have any information about the parents marriage Ramsey to Pearson?
All for now

My husband was always led to believe it was a Seaman's orphanage as their father was a Merchant Seaman. Does anybody have an idea's of any orphanages in that area, I do know it was not Barnardo's
